Tun 1401 is a very special vatting from Balvenie’s Warehouse 24, one of the oldest areas of the distillery grounds and home to some of the most special casks in Speyside. It was conceived by the Balvenie’s malt master Mr David Stewart, who was so inspired by the magical atmosphere inside Warehouse 24, that he created Tun 1401 to capture the essence of it in a bottle.
Each batch has unique characteristics and ingredients. They were made under the guidance of David Stewart, who hand selected every cask and monitored each batch as they “married” over a three month period. 7 Traditional Oak casks (9916, 16114, 5215, 17751, 15348, 5820 & 6993) and 3 Sherry casks (13251, 3543 & 8701) were used to create Batch 2, a limited release of 2226 bottles from 2011. 70cl. 50.6% vol. Nose: Sweet and rich on the nose with notes of tropical fruits, hints of coconut, a little spice, vanilla and marzipan. Touches of leather, dates and cinnamon, with rose petal jelly and barrel char. Palate: Oaky, rich and quite fruity, with nectarine, acacia honey and custard notes, hints of cocoa and walnut and a touch of apple sauce. Finish: Good length, with honey, spices and a suggestion of caramelised orange zest.
